Fixed Assets — Depreciation, Schedules and Journal Entries

Asset Depreciation and Accounting Entries for Odoo Community — builds the straight-line or declining-balance schedule of every fixed asset, period by period, on the company's own fiscal year, then posts each depreciation as a journal entry and derecognises the asset on disposal. Overview

Fixed Assets — the depreciation schedule and the journal entry

The free register tells you what the company owns. This module tells you what it costs each month, and posts it to the accounts.

It plugs into dyo_immobilisations_lite through four documented hook points in the base module. It adds no action to the register and modifies none: putting an asset into service builds the schedule, retiring it stops the schedule and removes the asset from the balance sheet, and resetting to draft is refused if entries exist.

Also searched as: depreciation Odoo Community, depreciation schedule Odoo, depreciation expense Odoo, depreciation board, account_asset Community, declining-balance depreciation Odoo, asset depreciation Odoo 19.

Two methods, and the fiscal year is yours

Straight-line and declining-balance, monthly, quarterly or yearly. Pro rata temporis is aligned with the company's fiscal year — Odoo's own, compute_fiscalyear_dates: a fiscal year ending June 30 is followed as is, with no reinvented calendar. Declining-balance switches to straight-line as soon as the straight-line rate over the remaining life exceeds the declining rate; otherwise the schedule would never fully run out.

The last installment absorbs the rounding difference: the schedule total is equal to the depreciable base, to the cent.

The declining-balance coefficient is never assumed

This is a regulatory value. The module does not hard-code it: it reads it from a scale you can view, correct and complete, where each line carries its legal basis. The French scale is shipped, with its article and source cited. No other country is provided — an unverified scale would lull its user into a false sense of security. Without a coefficient, the calculation is refused, and the refusal states exactly what is missing.

Journal entries

Each depreciation charge debits the expense account and credits the accumulated depreciation account, in the category's miscellaneous operations journal. When the asset leaves the fleet, an entry reverses the depreciation, expenses the net book value and closes out the asset.

No account, journal or chart of accounts is created. They exist in account; the category merely points to them.

The scheduled action that posts due depreciation entries ships disabled. Writing to a company's accounts without being asked is not a service: the accountant enables it.

Caveats, written down rather than left unsaid

Proration is calculated on actual days. The 30/360 convention, often used in France, is not implemented: amounts differ by a few units on the first and last periods. This is stated on screen, in the guide and here.

The module calculates no capital gain or loss on disposal and does not record receipt of the sale price: the sale remains an invoice, which carries the VAT and the customer. Recording both halves from two places would produce double income.

Assets under construction, revaluation, component accounting and tax-driven accelerated depreciation (amortissement dérogatoire) are not handled.
