What really happens. A merchant whose scale is no longer verified does not receive a letter: the legal metrology officer applies seals, and the instrument is taken out of service on the spot. A butcher shop without a scale cannot sell. A fuel dispenser under seal cannot dispense. The whole module rests on that consequence.

The legal basis, cited in full. French Decree No. 2001-387 of 3 May 2001 on the control of measuring instruments and, for each category, the order (arrêté) that governs it: Order of 26 May 2004 on non-automatic weighing instruments in service, Order of 10 January 2006 for automatic weighing instruments (Art. 10: “at intervals of no more than one year”), Order of 8 July 2020 for measuring systems for liquids other than water (Art. 17: one year), Order of 18 July 2001 for taximeters.

The inspection interval is not entered. It follows from the instrument's regulatory category, set once for the entire fleet. An operator does not set their scale to eighteen months because it suits their schedule.

A category does not always have a single frequency. Article 8 of the arrêté (order) of 26 May 2004 sets the verification of scales at two years if the maximum capacity is 30 kg or less and the instrument is used for direct sale to the public, and at one year otherwise. Maximum capacity and use are therefore inputs to the calculation, entered on the instrument. If the capacity is not provided, the shortest frequency applies — doubt must never lengthen a verification interval. Both durations and the 30 kg threshold remain configurable fields.

Seals are not lifted by unticking a box. It takes a periodic verification that is compliant and dated after the missed due date — exactly what the officer requires before removing the mark. And a sealed instrument cannot be declared in service.

No mark, no verification. A compliant verification recorded without its sticker number is rejected: in the field, the inspector only sees the mark affixed to the instrument.
