The bibliographic record and the copy are two different things. The Little Prince is a record — a title, an author, an ISBN. The library owns three copies of it, each with its own call number, location and history. That is what spreadsheets confuse, and it is what makes it impossible to answer the only question asked at the desk: “is there one available?”

Three refusals make up the whole job at the circulation desk. An expired membership, the category quota reached, and a reference-only document. Each is enforced when the loan is created, with a message that says what to do — not merely that it is impossible.

The loan period depends on the medium, not the patron. A DVD goes out for three weeks where a book goes out for four. Seven loan periods are set up at installation, and can be changed.

A reservation blocks renewal. A reader holding a book reserved by three others cannot renew it, even if they have renewals left: the message states how many people are waiting.

The hold queue applies to the title, not the copy. The first copy returned goes to the first person in line, and the position in the queue is calculated automatically.
